COVID-19 has left many people around the world stuck at home. Many of our patients have come to us with questions about what kind of snacks they should keep around their house that won’t harm their teeth. As your trusted dentist in Toledo, OH, we wanted to provide some dentist-approved and smile-friendly snack suggestions. Here are some good snacks to keep around your home:
Cheese is a great snack for your teeth. It has plenty of calcium in it, which your teeth need to continue to be strong. Additionally, cheese helps neutralize any acids that might be lingering around in your mouth from your last meal. This goes a long way in preventing tooth decay and the weakening of your tooth enamel. We recommend cubed cheese, string cheese, or sliced cheese as an easy, on-the-go snack that you can keep nearby for movie nights or while working at your computer. For our patients with TMJ disorders, this snack is easy on your jawbone as well and makes a great substitute for a crunchier snack that will overwork your mouth muscles.
A refreshing fruit smoothie will do wonders for your overall health and your dental health as well. You can include all types of fruits in your smoothie, but we recommend strawberries or kiwis. Kiwis contain high amounts of calcium, while strawberries are high in vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential to help your body fight off infections and help your mouth fight off gum disease. Gum disease is a common dental concern that our patients suffer from. Both of these fruits are very fibrous as well, which makes them your dental health’s best friends.
Almonds, Walnuts, or Cashews
We understand that sometimes you might crave a crunchy snack. As a good substitute for potato chips, which contain starches that can cause tooth decay, we suggest trying assorted nuts. Almonds, walnuts, and cashews specifically contain a variety of vitamins and minerals that are great for your dental health. Additionally, nuts assist with saliva production, which keeps your mouth moist and ready to wash away residue left behind in your mouth. This is a great snack to leave around your home. Instead of a bowl of candy, try keeping a bowl of nuts nearby. It’s a healthier snack that packs a crunch and also will help keep your teeth strong.
