At Hires Dental Care in Toledo, we are true believers that preventative care and education are the keys to optimal dental health. We strive to provide “dental health care” vs. “disease care”. That’s why we focus on thorough exams – checking the overall health of your teeth and gums, performing oral cancer exams, and taking x-rays when necessary. We also know that routine cleanings, flossing, sealants, and fluoride are all helpful in preventing dental disease. Not only are we focused on the beauty of your smile, but we’re also concerned about your health. A review of your medical history can help us stay informed of your overall health, any new medications, and any illnesses that may impact your dental health.
It is recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA) that patients come in twice a year for a professional cleaning and dental exam.
One of the biggest challenges in dentistry for children is preventing tooth decay. By bringing your children in for regular dental cleanings starting at age 3, we will be able to prevent tooth decay and subsequent dental cavities. We understand that the first few dental cleanings for them may be overwhelming. Our talented and gentle dental staff are trained to handle the needs of children.
Professional Dental Cleaning
Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are performed by our Registered Dental Hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:
- Removal of calculus (tartar)
- Removal of plaque
- Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
- Screening for gum disease
After your teeth cleaning, your dentist will examine your teeth and make any necessary recommendations for at-home oral hygiene and/or follow up dental treatment.
Why Are Teeth Cleanings Important?
Plaque is a sticky substance filled with bacteria that must be removed from your teeth with proper oral hygiene habits. This includes daily brushing and flossing. There are areas in your mouth where a toothbrush cannot reach. In these areas, the plaque will build-up and eventually hardens into something called tartar. The only way to remove the plaque and tartar in these hard to reach places is by a trained dental hygienist. If not properly and regularly removed, plaque and especially tartar will lead to gum irritation and infections. These infections will cause damage to the gum tissue and the underlying bone. for these reasons, we highly suggest visiting our Toledo, OH dentist office every six months for a proper dental cleaning.
