A tooth extraction may be recommended to address severe tooth decay, damage, or to resolve overcrowding of teeth. Although you might think you need a tooth extraction, this procedure is used only when absolutely necessary. Dr. J. Eric Hires always attempts to save a natural tooth with dental fillings or root canals, but tooth extractions are sometimes the only viable treatment for some patients. We may be able to save your tooth! Hires Dental Care offers a tooth extraction in the comfort of our Sylvania Township, OH dentist office.
Reasons for tooth extraction
- Advanced periodontal disease that has loosened the tooth roots
- Extra teeth or baby teeth that impede adult teeth
- Preparing a patient for orthodontic treatment
- Removing a fractured or malformed tooth
- Severe tooth decay which cannot be remedied with root canal therapy
What to Expect – Tooth Extraction
A tooth extraction is a fairly simple procedure. First, the dentist will numb the area to minimize discomfort and extract the tooth. After the tooth is extracted, it is important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. The socket will be packed with gauze; in most cases a small amount of bleeding is normal. We ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes after the appointment.
After the tooth is extracted you may feel some pain and experience some swelling. An ice pack or an unopened bag of frozen peas or corn applied to the area will keep swelling to a minimum. Take pain medications as prescribed. The swelling usually subsides after 48 hours.
To promote proper healing, avoid smoking, rinsing, or drinking through a straw for at least 24 hours. These activities can dislodge the clot, delay healing, and lead to dry socket. A cold cloth or ice bag may help with any pain or swelling. It is important to continue to brush and floss normally, however, take care to avoid the teeth next to the tooth socket.
A tooth extraction is a relatively painless procedure that can be performed in one visit to our office with the use of a local anesthetic. We also offer sedation dentistry for anyone who experiences anxiety or fear of the dentist.
Tooth Replacement – Dental Implants
After a tooth is extracted, Dr. Hires will recommend dental implants to replace your missing tooth or teeth. Dental implants are the number one recommended solution to missing teeth. Dental implants are the most natural-looking and advanced solution when compared to other teeth restorations. Hires Dental Care in the Sylvania Township, OH area is pleased to offer this progressive technology to our patients. We place all types of dental implants to meet your unique needs. Dr. Hires has extensive training in implant dentistry and performs all phases of treatment in the comfort of our dentist office.
